Freelance video editor or agency: the real calculation
·
The sticker price never tells the whole story. A freelancer at €60 per video can cost you more than an agency at €425 per month. Here is how we run the numbers, based on what we see with our clients.
Freelance video editor or agency: which one should you choose?
A freelance editor is the right choice for a one-off need, a single format and a tight budget. An agency is the right choice as soon as you publish every week, across several formats, and cannot afford a two-week gap. The real criterion is total cost: price, briefing time, revisions and the risk of absence.
What does a freelance editor really cost?
In France, a freelance video editor charges between €200 and €500 per day, with an average around €380 according to the 2026 day-rate barometer from Mission Freelances. On a marketplace like Codeur, the average editing project budget sits around €345 in September 2026.
Per video, the gap is huge. A beginner on a marketplace will take a Short for a few dozen euros. An experienced editor delivering animated captions and sound design charges several times more. That price is the visible part. You still have to add your own time.
Which hidden costs come on top of the freelance price?
Three costs never show up on the quote: briefing time, revisions and the risk of absence. When clients come to us after a freelancer, it is almost always one of those three that broke the relationship, never the price.
Briefing first. Every video needs the hook explained, the cuts to keep, the caption style, the music. Then revisions: a vague message, a V2 that misses, a V3 the next day. Do the math on 8 Shorts per month. With 20 minutes of briefing and 20 minutes of feedback per video, you spend more than 5 hours a month managing your editing.
Then absence. A freelancer is one person. They get sick, go on holiday, take a better-paid gig. If that happens the week of your launch, there is no plan B.
| Cost item | Freelance editor | Specialized agency |
|---|---|---|
| Sticker price | Variable, per video or per day | Fixed per month, from €425 excl. tax at Irys |
| Briefing time | Every video, in writing | Once, when we lock your visual DNA |
| Revisions | By messages, often vague | Direct annotation on the timeline |
| Editor absence | Production stops | Another editor on the team takes over |
| Formats | Often one specialty | Shorts, YouTube, Ads, VSL, podcast |
| Scaling up | Renegotiate or hire again | Switch plan |
When is a freelance editor the right choice?
A freelancer is the right choice if you publish less than one video a week, in a single format, and a one-week delay costs you nothing. It is also perfect for a one-off project: a VSL, a trailer, an event video.
And if you found a gem, keep them. A good freelancer who knows your style, replies within the hour and delivers on time is priceless. The problem is not the status, it is depending on one person when your volume grows.
When is an agency the right choice?
An agency is the right choice as soon as you publish every week, across several formats, and your production must never stop. You pay a fixed price, you get a team, and if your editor is away, someone else picks up with the same brief.
Watch the word “agency” though. A generalist video agency doing corporate and weddings does not know short-form codes. Look for a team that only does this, for creators like you. At Irys, every client gets an editor and a manager. We lock your visual DNA on the first video, then you drop your footage on Frame.io and approve in one click. Over 1,600 videos delivered that way.
How do you run the numbers for your own case?
Take your monthly volume, put a price on your hour, and add briefing and revision time to the price of the videos. Then add what a two-week gap mid-launch would cost you, and compare that total with an agency’s fixed price.
Example. You publish 8 Shorts a month and value your hour at €100. The freelancer charges €50 per video, so €400. Your 5 hours of management are worth €500. Real total: €900 per month, before the risk of absence. Our Shorts Machine plan is €425 excl. tax for 8 videos, publishing included. Plug in your own numbers.
Frequently asked questions
Is a freelance editor always cheaper than an agency?
No. Per isolated video, yes. At monthly volume, briefing and revisions often weigh more than the price gap. Compare total cost, not the quote.
Can I start with a freelancer and move to an agency later?
Yes, it is the most common path among our clients. We pick up your existing style on the first video, which is free, and lock the visual DNA from there.
Does an agency lock you into a contract?
Not at Irys: the subscription is monthly, no commitment, with a 30-day notice. Always check this point before signing with any provider.
How do I know if my current freelancer is reliable?
Look at three signals: response time, respect of announced dates, and the quality of the first version. If you have to chase every video, the problem is already there.
