One minute of finished video can take an hour or a full day to edit. It all depends on format and finish. Here are the real timings, what stretches them, and the turnaround you can demand.
How long does it take to edit a video?
Plan one to three hours for a polished Short, half a day to two days for a 10-minute YouTube video, one to three days for a VSL, and one to two days for a multi-cam podcast episode with its clips. Turnaround is a different question: at Irys it is 48 to 72 hours.
How long does it take to edit a Short?
A 30 to 60-second Short takes one to three hours of editing when it is built for retention. A simple crop with auto captions takes twenty minutes, but it is not the same product.
Format length says nothing about working time. A YouTube Short can run up to 3 minutes, and so can an Instagram Reel since January 2025. What matters is the number of decisions per second: cuts, zooms, word-by-word captions, sounds, B-roll.
How long does it take to edit a 10-minute YouTube video?
A 10-minute YouTube video takes half a day to two days of editing. Logging footage weighs heavily: for 10 finished minutes you often send 40 to 60 minutes of footage, and all of it must be reviewed.
Then comes structure. A talking-head video with no B-roll or chapters edits fast. A video with screen captures, inserts, text animations and a thumbnail takes twice as long. And audio always takes longer than planned.
How long does it take to edit a VSL or a podcast?
A VSL takes one to three days, a multi-cam podcast episode one to two days including its clips. They are the two longest formats, for opposite reasons.
The VSL is short but every shot must sell: motion design, on-screen proof, pacing locked to the script. The podcast is long but more mechanical: syncing cameras, cutting by speaker, cleaning audio, then pulling the best moments into Shorts. What makes editing take longer?
Four things stretch editing far more than final length: messy footage, audio that needs repair, a vague brief, and feedback in several waves. None of them is about the editor’s talent.
Footage first. Three files named “IMG_4521” with takes cut mid-sentence cost an hour of sorting before the first cut. Then audio: a rubbing mic or an echoing room can be fixed, but it eats the time that would have gone into pacing. Feedback last: five comments sent at once take thirty minutes. What turnaround can you demand?
Demand a 48 to 72-hour turnaround per video once footage is uploaded, brief included. That is the standard we hold at Irys across all plans, and a realistic one for an organized editor.
Editing time and turnaround are two different things. A Short takes two hours of work but lands in a queue of videos. A good provider gives you a fixed turnaround, not a working time. If the answer is “it depends”, ask on what.

Yes, for a Short or a simple video, as long as the footage is clean and the brief is clear. With an agency, rush jobs are agreed in advance, not on the day.
Why does the editor ask for more time than the video length?
Because one finished minute holds dozens of decisions: cuts, captions, sounds, zooms. The usual ratio is one to three hours of work per finished minute on polished short-form.
Does editing time change the price?
